March 31 is Farmworkers Day in California

Good Morning Mountain View Families,
Earlier this month, in light of the deeply concerning news regarding allegations of abuse involving Cesar Chavez, I asked that all schools and departments pause any planned activities, celebrations, or events specifically held in his name.
As of March 2026, California has officially renamed the March 31 holiday from Cesar Chavez Day to Farmworkers Day. This change honors the entire workforce behind agricultural labor rather than one individual. It recognizes the often unseen contributions of hundreds of thousands of people who help provide food for California and the nation. Moreover, celebrating this during Women’s History Month further highlights the tremendous contributions women such as Dolores Huerta and so many others have made to our country and the lives of others.
Today, in the Mountain View School District and across our State, Farmworkers Day honors a movement that transformed working conditions and advanced dignity, fairness, and basic protections for farmworkers nationwide. The Farmworker Movement stands as a powerful example of collective action, perseverance, and the pursuit of justice in the face of significant challenges. Its impact has made a meaningful difference in the lives of farmworkers and immigrant communities, benefiting us all.
As a school district, our top priority is ensuring the safety and well-being of our students and staff, while fostering learning environments where every student feels they belong, are supported, and empowered to succeed. As we reflect on the history and impact of the Farmworker Movement, we reaffirm our responsibility to ensure every student feels seen, respected, and encouraged.
Daily, I am proud of the work of every member of this district. Through acts of kindness, service, and advocacy, each of our students, family, staff and community members make a positive and meaningful difference in advancing our shared mission to “Inspire Each Student to Succeed Every Day.”
Sincerely,
Raymond Andry, Ed.D.
Superintendent
Mountain View School District
On Monday, March 30, 2026, the State of California's Department of Industrial Relations posted the above image on their social media channels, depicting over a dozen California Farm Workers outdoors in the fields, picking fresh strawberries.
The text states, "Governor Newsom proclaims March 31 Farmworkers Day in California."
